The U.S. Department of Education stresses the importance of the S.T.E.M. fields for helping youth develop critical thinking and deductive reasoning skills that are crucial in our increasingly complex world. To encourage kids of all ages to explore the S.T.E.M. fields, and to assist teachers who would like to incorporate S.T.E.M. activities into their classrooms, the Library offers a variety of S.T.E.M. kits for checkout. Kits can be checked-out for two weeks at a time and can be placed on hold. 4D Science: Plant Cell

(Ages 8 and Up) 4D Master. Put together a model of a plant cell. The plant cell is not only enclosed in a thin cell membrane, but also protected by a rigid protective cell wall. (Ages 8 and Up) 4D Master. Put together a model of an animal cell. Enclosed in a thin double layer, the cell membrane contains many different organelles including a membrane-bound nucleus. (Suggested Grades: PreK-6, but can be modified for other grade levels) Illinois Department of Natural Resources.  This trunk offers materials to supplement lessons about Native Americans in Illinois and animals that once lived in Illinois.  The “People” section of the trunk includes items that Native Americans used for food, pottery replicas, books, a video, activities, daily staples of Native American life, posters, and more.  The “Animals” are represented by replica species, mammoth and mastodon replica teeth, activities and other items.  All items are correlated to the Illinois Learning Standards and Illinois Early Learning Standards.
